There is something within us travel lovers, that draws us to see the world, a hunger to explore that never ceases to excite, and a wanderlust which encourages us to new cities and unknown locations. At first consideration, this could be an ancestral remnant of those before us who have chartered unknown waters or been the first to step onto foreign shores, to be able to see the unseen. However, if we dwell on our need to travel a bit longer, what is it that appeals so much to us?
A survey-based study undertaken last year has proven that those who travel often report better health, especially mentally. Some theories for this are that breaking our habits and routine; to adapt to an unfamiliar environment can be mentally stimulating and divert our attention from what we normally do. It can help people to be calmer by offering an escape from work related pressures and daily stress, and due to this can act as a reset for the mind and body, decreasing our cortisol by increasing our excitement. People who travel more allegedly have increased creativity, as the exposure to different cultures, food, language, and music broadens one’s horizons.
Whatever it is that draws us to traveling, it can have so many benefits for mind, body and soul, and how you choose to travel is a personal preference based on what recharges your batteries and makes you feel refreshed.
