James Watkins’ Speak No Evil (2024) is a remake of the Danish thriller of the same name; the film begins with two families holidaying in Italy. They both have incredibly different lifestyles, but we soon find out that there’s a lot more to disagree on than parenting techniques. There are some memorable moments; James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy give stellar performances throughout, accompanied by two brilliant child actors. It’s a fun watch and definitely kept me on the edge of my seat; this is James McAvoy’s most terrifying performance to date.
There are polarising opinions on the Hollywood version being remade so soon after the original, but I think Watkins did an amazing job of making the film his own. Although, I think it would have benefitted from being cut down by half an hour. McAvoy’s rendition of “Eternal Flame” by The Bangles is also not one to forget; I never knew that song could be so eerie!
