Lupa pizza in Norwich are charging £100 for a pineapple and ham pizza as they hate it. 

“I absolutely loathe pineapple on a pizza,” said the restaurant’s co-owner Francis Woolf. The head chef, Quin Jianoran, agreed, adding: “I love a pina colada, but pineapple on pizza? Never. I’d rather put a bloody strawberry on one than that tropical menace.” 

“(We) vehemently dislike pineapple on pizza,” said Woolf. “We feel like it doesn’t suit pizza at all.” 

The menu description reads: “Yeah, for £100 you can have it. Order the champagne too! Go on you Monster!” 

Take the 26A bus from the Uni to Gladstone Street and after an 8-minute walk you will see for yourself the eye-watering price tag. 

Jianoran, said they kept tinned pineapple at the restaurant in case someone ordered it, but this had yet to happen. 

A January 2024 survey by British polling and research company YouGov showed that one in two of Britons either love or like pineapple on pizza, 16% disliked it and nearly one in five hated it. 

The pizza itself originated in Canada by a Greek immigrant called Sam Panopoulos in 1962.  

This has caused Justin Trudeau, prime minister of Canada, to passionately defend his country’s culinary contribution in a tweet when others have expressed distaste. 

In 1959 Hawaii had officially become an American state and popularity of the island grew exponentially. Canned pineapple began to be imported into North America, along with pineapple juice. 

Panopoulos decided to add this new ingredient on his pizzas in honour of the island and its popularity, he soon found the combination of sweet, and savoury was proving a winner with his customers so the trend continued to where it is today. 

Master pizzaiolo (pizza chef) Franco Pepe owns a restaurant in Caiazzo, north of Naples. He’s been named the best pizza maker in the world on multiple occasions and yet doesn’t shy away from pineapple on pizza. 

Speaking to food website La Cucina Italiana, Pepe said he thought the reason many were against pineapple was because it clashed too much with the base sauce. 

Whether a clever marketing trick or a real disgust Lupa continues to make headlines with their pricy pizza but that won’t stop the lovers of the Hawaiian buying elsewhere.
