Growing Violas (Violaceae family) is a relatively easy and rewarding project. These colourful flowers thrive in cool conditions, making them the perfect houseplant. They have an ample blooming time which starts in early spring and follows through into fall.
Follow these steps for a successful Viola growth!
Materials Needed:
- Viola seeds
- Seed-starting mix
- Pot with drainage holes
- Watering Can or Spray Bottle
- Windowsill
Instructions:
- Pot + Soil
Select a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging and root rot. Fill the pot with a seed-starting mix.
TIP: Violas prefer soil that’s slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6-7).
2) Add the Seeds
Scatter the Viola seeds on top of the seed-starting mix. Gently press the seeds into the soil, but do not cover them as they need light to germinate.
3) Bright Spot
Place the pots in a bright spot with indirect light.
4) Water Regularly
Water the soil gently and regularly using a watering can or spray bottle, keeping the surface evenly moist. Be careful not to overwater, as Violas don’t like soggy soil nor stagnant water.
5) Patience is Key
Wait for your Violas to germinate, to grow, and to bloom.
With proper care, your indoor Violas will reward you with their colourful company!
