What have our writers been listening to this month?

‘Gary’ by Blossoms

Could a song about a fibreglass-hearted gorilla stolen from a Lanarkshire garden centre be any good? After hearing this news story in his car, the lead singer of Blossoms, Tom Ogden, wrote arguably one of Blossoms’ most successful hits. The track encompasses the playfulness that Blossoms bring to the indie-rock genre with their catchy melodies and witty lyricism. After seeing them live in late 2024 at the LCR and seeing the love fans have for Gary, the travelling gorilla they brought on tour, I can confidently say yes, a song about a fibreglass-hearted gorilla can be good – it’s called Gary. – Lilia Colledge

Romance is Boring by Los Campesinos!

For some years now Romance is Boring has been my favourite album. It has been called indie rock, maximalist, twee-punk, etc. but I find it to have an imperfect sound which makes it something unique and special. Despite themes of death, sex, football and decay, LC!’s lyricism is often mentally and physically poetic. In its fifteen tracks and three act structure the album tells a story of despair that climaxes in ‘The Sea is a Good place to Think of the Future’. Although the sound is love it or hate it, I would encourage you to just give it a go! – Lillie Clark

Del Water Gap

While drumming for another band, S. Holden Jaffe spotted his soon to be stage name handwritten in Sharpie on the back of a box truck – Del Water Gap. Jaffe first gained recognition with his single ‘Ode to a Conversation Stuck in Your Throat’, before releasing his debut self-titled album which solidified his reputation for heartfelt storytelling and dreamy soundscapes. “When we’re struggling […] often we get this horrible solipsistic feeling, like, ‘No one else could possibly feel this bad”, he shares about his recent work, “it has been very cathartic to see it resonate with a lot of other people”. – Evelyn Oakes
