When I initially started working as an editor for HOTW, I was a little too sure of my organisational abilities and had a tendency to use sticky notes excessively. I now have much more, mainly a stack of newspapers with my name printed on them (which I will always find surreal) and an appreciation of exactly how much caffeine is necessary to meet deadlines. More than just editing stories, being a member of this team has been about seeing ideas become headlines, those early morning layout slots where four hours just pass by, and the sheer joy of seeing a new print edition after all the hustle and bustle that goes into it. I honestly questioned my life decisions the first time I sat in front of that PC, engrossed in a sea of InDesign panels. But I gradually figured things out, margin by margin. Funnily enough, the layout process turned out to be one of my favourite aspects of this job, even though I never imagined that I would get so fixated on font sizes and text alignment. Who knew it could be so satisfying to arrange text and images? I want to use this opportunity to say a massive thank you to the Concrete team. I couldn’t have done it without the writers who trusted me with their thoughts, the editors who never failed to support me, and everyone who contributed to making each issue a reality. I appreciate the chance, your unwavering encouragement, and your patience with me when I couldn’t quite navigate the role. Finally, to everyone who picks up a copy of HOTW and flips through the pages—thank you. It was strange to see my name printed, but to know that you’re reading it? That’s even better. I hope the next editor enjoys it as much as I did.
