Every Christmas people flock to the supermarkets, hurdling down the food aisles and racing to the checkout lines. With all the spectacle Christmas dinner achieves, it is without a doubt the showstopper of the night. Yet, it makes me wonder if it’s any different to your typical Sunday roast.

Since first year, I’ve maintained my (almost) weekly tradition of catching up over homemade roast with my childhood friend. Fortunately, I have yet to be tired of eating roasts on a regular; but I must admit that my roasts are vegetarian; so it isn’t as filling as one accompanied with meat. All in all, a Sunday roast and a Christmas dinner are fundamentally the same. To me, it’s nothing special. The real magic lies in the warmth of togetherness by enjoying food with all, and to me that is seldom in a world of 9-5s and studying. The key difference I see is the addition of roast turkey, and in all honesty; I find it rather dry.

Speaking to the guinea pigs, my friends told me of their roast-less weeks and despite this; they don’t think they’d get sick of it. Yet my Northern friends have it on a regular and wouldn’t get tired of an additional roast dinner as well as a Sunday roast on Christmas week. Although the consensus is that a Christmas dinner is pretty much the same as a Sunday roast, it’s all about ‘going all out’ for the festive season. Extravagance is the goal and stuffed bellies is the ultimate mission.

Overall, Christmas isn’t any other day; don’t let the calorie counting burden your holidays and treat yourself, you deserve it after all the hard work this year!
