‘Going on a hike’ used to be dirty!
Climbing up treacherous paths whilst facing elements like rain, sleet and often mud splatters.
In response to these harsh and unpredictable conditions, numerous brands cater to this outdoorsy lifestyle: The North Face, Mountain Warehouse, Patagonia, Arc’teryx.
Function and practicality were priorities over style, although recently, as the internet seized hold, a trend, ‘Hiking-core/ Gorpcore’ was born.
‘Gorpcore’ is a mix of the traditional hiker and streetstyle. To achieve the look, pair a windbreaker shell with cargos and a fitted cropped tank top or crop top. Layering is important, if you can wear two tanks even better. Over the top add a technical running vest, a pair of mirrored sunglasses and a 25L hiking bag.
If so far, you have kept to a neutral colour palette, you’re on track (or trail?). Finally, finish with a pair of chunky trainers. If you want to add a pop of colour, do so with your accessories and shoes, or you have the option to switch your base to colour and accessories to neutrals.
Despite this look dominating the internet currently, I am slightly concerned for those who have never been hiking and are now influenced by this ‘Gorpcore’ trend.

Wearing all black or dark earthy tones is a search and rescue nightmare, which is more likely to occur if you are hiking in a tank-top without the sufficient gear.
Overall, I am glad the outdoors is ‘trending’ and that fashion has encouraged people to briefly leave their screens and step outside, next I suggest we make first-aid kits trendy too.
