The Outrun sees the return of Saoirse Ronan, at possibly her best. Rona (Saoirse Ronan) is an alcoholic who returns to her home in the Orkney Islands. The backdrop of crashing waves and vast cliffs connects Rona with nature and, through that, herself. Fingscheidt’s direction and Ronan’s raw performance depict the inner workings of human consciousness, both truthfully and with empathy.
Fingschedidt flitters between London and Orkney as though we are watching Rona reflect on who she’s hurt and what’s led her home, with memory as a tool used to understand the mind of a recovering alcoholic. This closely reflects the journalistic elements of Amy Liptrot’s original memoir. Liptrot’s close involvement in the production can be traced through the compassionate depiction of Rona and the world around her. On a more light-hearted note, if you love seals, definitely watch this!
