The MTV Video Music Awards showcase the best the industry has to offer to the world of music. But it’s time to call in the Fashion Police to investigate this year’s style hits and misses. So, let’s take a dive into the outfits of the VMAs with the five best and worst looks from the black carpet. 

Best 

5 – Singer-songwriter and actress Thalía shone in a rose gold, metallic Harvey Cenit dress. The high-low style gown was complete with foil roses on the skirt and bust, inspired by her telenovela character Rosalinda. 

4 – Metallic was a popular choice on this year’s carpet as Coco Jones donned a silver Lever Couture gown. The Performance of the Year nominated artist shimmered in $240,000 worth of diamonds and mesh ribbons, serving an ethereal and elegant look. 

3 – K-Pop star Lisa gave us alien glam in a hooded and gloved Mugler gown. The Best K-Pop winner paired her nude dress with gorgeous gold accessories, complimenting the shining gold accents of her corset. 

2 –Song of the Year winner Sabrina Carpenter stunned with Marilyn Monroe glamour in a gorgeous silver Bob Mackie gown. Originally made for Madonna in 1991, this shimmering number was the perfect Old Hollywood look for pop’s latest princess. 

1 – And finally, the best dressed of the night was Best New Artist winner Chappell Roan as she served renaissance beauty and grace with three stunning Joan of Arc inspired gowns. She began on the black carpet where she wore a sheer Y/Project gown and cloak, paired with long, cut-throat nails and a sword! She then changed into a full suit of armer for a truly medieval performance of Good Luck Babe. Finally, she accepted her award in a beautiful chain mail dress. A literal slay! 

Worst 

5 – What was perhaps the most surprising disappointment went to the most awarded artist of the night, Taylor Swift. Before switching into a bejewelled mini dress complete with the ‘Down Bad’ spaceship embellishment, she wore a yellow and black tartan Dior gown. The high-low dress complete with leather strappy gloves reminded me of 2016 Tumblr rather than what I’m assuming was supposed to be edgy almost punk vibes. It makes me wonder whether Dior was the right designer to achieve this look. 

4 – Singer and Songwriter Karol G’s dress honestly reminded me of the flame of the Hot Wheels logo and now I can’t unsee it, so I need you to see it too. 

3 – Rapper and singer Stefflon Donned (see what I did there) a bright green, thigh spilt tulle skirt, paired with a green bikini style bra top. 

2 – Model Alessandra Ambrosio wore a shiny blue ruched party dress that looked straight out of the Pretty Little Thing sale section from 2020. Definitely a strange choice for an awards ceremony. 

1 – And finally, the worst look of the night goes to singer and songwriter Addison Rae. I don’t even know where to begin. The half of a tutu. The strange pillows in the bra. The feathers. The literal underwear. I’m sorry, but this custom Miss Claire Sullivan was a hot, Vegas wedding, mess.
