As 2024 comes to an end, it’s time to take a step back and reflect on the stories that shaped our year. This season, Concrete  is excited to bring you Home of the Wonderful Wrapped – a compilation of our most memorable highlights, events, and accomplishments in lieu of a full December issue. We have explored everything from sustainability on campus and hidden gems in Norwich, to student-led innovations and cultural festivals. These narratives aren’t simply just articles; they are snippets of the vibrant community that makes UEA unique and distinguishable. Through them, we have honoured and celebrated the ingenuity, tenacity, and determination of students and staff alike.

This year has been one of exploration and inspiration, whether it was uncovering campus commitment to sustainability, delving into the origins of UEA’s art and architecture, or highlighting the diverse voices that enrich our university. Come along with me as I revisit the individuals, concepts, and projects that made this year one to remember. From creativity to connection, let’s uncover the narratives that defined our campus and our community.

Looking back, every piece covered more than just facts – they carried a thread of discovery. There’s something otherworldly about looking back; how the moments we didn’t think twice about at the time now stand out with unexpected meanings. Whether it was exploring Norwich’s lesser-known corners in Hidden Gems of Norwich: Student Favourites or celebrating the surplus of traditions on campus in Cultural Festivals at UEA, we have discovered what makes UEA so vibrant and alive.

The stories we told reflect the heart of our community – a shared dedication to creativity, sustainability, and connection. We highlighted how students and staff alike are reimagining what it means to live in balance with the environment in Sustainable Living on Campus: Green Initiatives at UEA. These projects, which ranged from student-run strategies to energy-efficient buildings, demonstrated that even the smallest of changes can create a ripple outward in meaningful ways. In a similar vein, UEA’s Pushing for Change: Fossil-Free Careers showcased student activism, challenging institutions to align their practices with a more ethical, sustainable future.

Our exploration didn’t stop there. The Founding of UEA article took us back to the university’s roots, revealing the innovative and radical ideas that formulated the groundwork for an organisation that thrives on interdisciplinary study and bold concepts. Meanwhile, UEA’s Sculptures: What Do They Mean? Asked us to stop and consider the various artistic manifestations on campus, each with a complex and captivating meaning that is as rich as the intriguing stories they tell. Naturally, we also spotlighted and honoured the innovative and inclusive culture that sets UEA apart. We explored student talent, enthusiasm, and inventiveness to change the university’s music scene in UEA Grooves: Redefining Campus Music Culture. Along with this, UEA’s Black History Month showcased the gatherings, discussions, and projects that celebrated the culture and contributions of Black communities on campus. These stories serve as a reminder of the value of cooperation, communication, and a common goal of building a more dynamic, welcoming university for all.

As we wrap up the year, these stories remind us all of what we’ve achieved, and all we have ahead of us. Every article was, rather than merely reflecting the present, a step towards a future moulded by passion, curiosity, and purpose. It is with high hopes that we carry this spirit with us into the new year and beyond. It has been a pleasure to be a part of the Concrete team so far, and I’m highly looking forward to another year of curiosity and innovation.
