Every first Monday in May, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art hosts the fashion event of the year. The Met Gala showcases the finest creations the world of fashion has to offer, so naturally I thought I would offer my completely unsolicited opinions on this years’ looks. One thing I will mention, is that I am absolutely over the moon that there was a distinct lack of men in plain black tuxedos, given the theme was ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’. Personally, I think Anna Wintour should act as a bouncer on the door and turn anyone away that does not even attempt the theme, but that might just be me. So, lets take a look at the five best and worst looks from the night.
Best
5 – Jennie was the picture of elegance as she wore a black, off-the-shoulder Chanel number with tailored trousers and long overskirt. The structured bodice was adorned with two strings of pearls and topped with a black and white top hat.
4 – Doechii made her Met Gala debut in a tailored Louis Vuitton outfit. The white, cropped, logo printed jacket was paired with high waisted, white and grey, checkerboard shorts and burgundy leather loafers.
3 – Janelle Monae gave us not one, but two outstanding Thom Browne looks this Met Gala. She began her night in a boxy overcoat, illustrating a half pinstripe, half black suit, with a red striped background. This was then removed on the carpet to reveal a half black pinstripe and half red, structured suit.
2 – Coco Jones also stunned in her Met Gala debut in a gorgeous Manish Malhotra tailored white trousers and long-lined trained jacket. Embellished with pearls and crystals, she shone on the blue carpet. Now that’s how you make a Met Gala debut!
1 – Finally, my favourite look of the night was undoubtedly Teyana Taylor in a custom Ruth E Carter. She wore a gorgeous long, red cloak over a black and red pinstriped suit, red waistcoat and leather gloves. This was topped with a red top with feathery details. Not only did she master the theme but also certainly brought the most glamour!
Worst
5 – Shakira apparently failed to read the brief of this year’s theme, wearing a fitted pink dress with side cutouts and large bustle and flowing train. This honestly looked like it could have been worn at any award show, definitely not meeting the expectations of the night.
4 – Angele. I’m sorry, but I cannot get behind fishnets at the Met Gala. She wore a two-piece, lavender bodice and shirt that looked like it could have done with being ironed beforehand, paired a black leather jacket.
3 – Precious Lee wore a skintight sparkling Prabal Gurung bodysuit and leopard print cloak. Although it seems strange to call a diamanté catsuit boring, I just feel as though more could have been done here.
2 – Maya Hawke seemingly also decided the dress code did not apply to her in a pink Prada dress and dark beige cloak. Not only did the two colours not go together, but it was just a dull look.
1 – Finally, the worst look of the night in my humble opinion belonged to Amelia Gray. She wore a red lace Valentino number, made up of matching tights, underwear worn over a pair of beige bloomers, jacket, and quite controversially, a durag. While this was certainly an interesting interpretation of the theme, unfortunately it did not hit the mark.
