Valentine’s Day may have passed, but the appeal of a great romcom never expires. From heartwarming meet-cutes to quietly devastating love stories that will have you sobbing on your sofa, these films are worth revisiting at any time of year.
The Proposal (2009) is a classic example of an enemies-to-lovers situation, where two characters are forced to marry to avoid deportation. The awkwardness and tense nature of their time together make for good comedy, whilst their romantic ending brings the joy that all good romcoms should.
Miss Congeniality (2000) teaches us not to be afraid to step out of our comfort zone and try new things, as it can change how we perceive ourselves and the world around us.
Love Actually (2003) in my opinion, should never be limited to the holiday season. It tells the story of love from many perspectives: innocent childhood, broken marriages, dancing prime ministers.
She’s The Man (2006) is a hilarious film of deception where a teenage girl pretends to be her twin brother in order to get to know better the man she loves. The constant attempts and close fails of redirection and almost being discovered culminate in the entertaining reveal of her deception to everyone. It is a movie that shows how far some of us will go for love.
Pretty Woman (1990) is a movie that shows how love often comes when we least expect it, and we should not let society limit us to the love and life it thinks we deserve.
Me Before You (2016) is a romcom with a rather sad ending. It shows the highs and lows of falling in love when you know time is limited but still choose to enjoy that little time you have.
Bridget Jones (2001, 2004, 2016, 2025) are movies that teaches us it’s okay not to be perfect and not to have our lives pan out like the women in all those other slightly unrealistic romcoms. The collection of films shows the reality of dating throughout different stages of life and gives us a good laugh along the way.
