The School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing’s spoken word night New Writing Live returned on 5 March to a roaring success at Dorothy’s Bar after a year-long hiatus.
New Writing Live is a student-run series showcasing UEA’s emerging student writers, alongside engaging readings from UEA creative writing academics and alumni.
Hosted by UEA’s Head of Creative Writing Dr. Philip Langeskov, seven UEA students showcased their writing ranging from creative non-fiction, poetry, novel extracts and short stories to rapturous applause.
Over forty attendees were also treated to two readings of LDC Creative Writing Lecturer Dr. Jasmin Kirkbride’s new novel The Forest on the Edge of Time, an immersive narrative blending climate fiction and time travel.
UEA’s Head of Creative Writing Dr. Philip Langeskov said: ‘I’m delighted that New Writing Live has been reawakened – and in front of such a large and enthusiastic crowd. There’s a lot of noise in the world these days – you may have noticed – much of it generated by the words ‘artificial’ and ‘intelligence’. Sometimes, that noise can drown out a fundamental truth: that, at its heart, writing is an act of human-to-human communication. Nowhere is that connection more vivid, more thrillingly present, than at a live literature event like this. If you’ve never been, whether as audience or performer, I’d put it on your bucket list.’
The next New Writing Live event will take place at Dorothy’s on 11 May with doors open from 5:30pm for a 6:30pm start. No ticket is required, students can just show up on the night.
All UEA students are invited to submit their interest in reading a piece of writing. Students can register their interest in reading using the form below:
