This is a perfect Valentine’s Day meal to impress your boo, or if you really want a spag bol recipe to last you a week. It’s simple, hearty, and filling. Plus, made with love and comes with an extra little treat of red wine. Pair this recipe with tiramisu and it’ll be the perfect date night meal.

Ingredients:

  • 2 finely chopped onions
  • 2 sticks of celery finely chopped
  • 3 carrots grated
  • 200g beef and 200g pork
  • 1 tin of tomatoes
  • Mixed herbs, salt and pepper
  • Spaghetti
  • 1 tin of Passata

Method:

  1. Begin by frying off the choice of meat in a pan over medium heat, until well browned. Take the meat out and leave to rest on a separate plate whilst the vegetables are prepared.
  1. Drain off the fat and add all vegetables into the same pan to soften them. At this point in time a splash of red wine is optional to deglaze the pan. You’ll know the onions are done when they have gone translucent.
  1. Add the meat back into the pan, and if garlic is for you then add minced cloves here.
  1. Time to get saucy… Add the tin of chopped tomatoes and feel free to add as much Passata as you wish to have sauce. This helps the sauce be more rounded and sweeter.
  1. Traditionally, Bolognese would simmer for 8-9 hours in an Italian household but try to leave it to simmer on a low heat for 6 hours. If this isn’t in your schedule, then let it simmer for about an hour and a half on medium-low heat. The goal is to get the flavours to marinate.
  1. When ready to serve, heat a large saucepan of water, add salt to lower the boiling point, and cook your spaghetti following the box instructions.
  1. Drain, mix and serve.
